Fulfilling a Pledge With a Charitable Gift Annuity

Exterior of buildingIn a 2006 letter which accompanied a donation, Dr. Paul Hauser wrote, “Philanthropy is a connection between the residents and the charitable mission, and Betsy and I appreciate being involved and making a difference.” Though the Hausers are now both deceased, his words ring true today.

Paul and Betsy Hauser were active and social members of the Westminster Place community. They enjoyed being involved and social with friends and neighbors and volunteered their time to various campus endeavors. Their giving record spans a mile long with donations to nearly every campaign during their residence with Westminster Place.

Dr. Hauser was an avid golfer. He golfed in almost every golf outing held by the Geneva Foundation, until which time he became a sponsor at the golf outings. Betsy took a particular interest in the garden space between One Calvin A-Wing and the One Arbor Apartments. Her investment changed the small space into what we now call the Chinese Garden.

In 1995, when Dr. Allen Kimble, Chairman of the Board, asked the Hausers to make a gift to the Kimble Fitness Center, they used a charitable gift annuity to fulfill their pledge. The Hausers appreciated that the gift annuity rate was higher than traditional CDs or money-market rates. And the annuity had tax advantages over other fixed income. The Hausers would go on to have four charitable gift annuities with the Geneva Foundation, which provided quarterly payments for 27 years. At their passing that which remained in charitable benefit was passed along to the Kimble Fitness Center.

Paul and Betsy left many friends behind at Westminster Place. They are fondly remembered in conversations of neighbors and in the projects around Westminster Place they were involved in. Their generosity to the Kimble Fitness Center has been put into operation and is doing good for those who utilize the good services within. Thank you, Paul and Betsy. God bless you both.
